My Tan-man

Well...Jim, Brian and Christy...you have a new ally in your mocking of me. You've been shaking your head at me for a couple years now because I still refer to the guys as 'my babies'. The term 'little men' or 'little guys' I thought was a big step forward for me over the past few months.

To my complete shock and disappointment, Tanner has joined your band wagon. I'll refer to him as Baby Tanner from time to time, to which he would respond he was a big boy. Fine - I get it. I can deal with that. However, twice over the past week he's corrected me over much lesser offenses. On the way out of the grocery store, and again this AM over breakfast, I was informed that his name is Tanner, not Tan-man! Then, to add insult to injury, when I said something about him being my little guy he quickly barked 'I'm your big boy guy, not your little guy!'. I'm beginning to think that this talking thing is totally overrated. I think I liked it better when he didn't have an opinion to be voiced!

Here's the deal Tanner - I'll agree to drop the 'baby' reference from my vocabulary, and will even attempt to leave 'little' behind as well. As for Tan-man....that isn't going anywhere. Because Mommy says so.

More power to you! You don't get to choose your own nickname -- it's high time Tanner learns that lesson.

I still call my girls my babies. So far, they're young enough not to disagree with me, but that can't last much longer. They'll always be my baby girls!

We used to call David Tater, after a character in the old "Snuffy Smith" cartoon.
Dan went from Danny to Dan about the time he entered middle school. That was a hard trasition for me. Grandma, on the other hand, was always permitted to call him Danny.
I still call Kelly Missy from time to time, and she doesn't object.

It's hard when little guys start turning into big guys. It breaks your heart and makes you proud all at the same time.
No matter what they say, they'll always be Mommie's boys on the inside, even when they wouldn't dream of admitting it.
Good luck. Heart rending as it all is, it means you're doing a good job.

My thought is...you birth them, you get to call them whatever you darn well please! And you get to pinch their cheeks when you do it :)

Aunt Joan - I so love all your advice and family history! Things I've never known - and never would have if you didn't comment so frequently. Thank you! (I'm still have fun with the dark 'Can I cut?' remarks from a little Jimmy.)

Thanks Amy.
Most of that is because I've always loved my Jimmy Jett so, and because I'm frustrated that I don't get to see you more.
Thanks for keeping this blog. I know your busy, but it means a lot to those of us that don't get to see you often.

I still call Jim Jimmy. I also call Dan Danny. I call Kelly Kel. I don't think any of them really chose that. I especially like Aunt Joan's "Ladybug" nickname for Kelly and sometimes myself. Grandpa Clark still calls me "Princess." Tanner will probably enjoy hearing you call him by his special nickname when he is old enough to have established himself.

I used to think it was silly to hear people refer to their bigger kids as babies but now I totally agree. They are your babies and they always will be, no matter how big they may be :)
